Cillian Murphy, the Irish actor, just bagged the prestigious Oscar for Best Actor! He clinched this award for his fantastic portrayal of nuclear physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer in the movie “Oppenheimer.”
It’s a biopic directed by Christopher Nolan, the guy behind some of your favorite movies like Batman Begins.
This marks Murphy’s sixth time working with Nolan, starting with his role as the Scarecrow in Batman Begins.
Murphy faced some tough competition for the Oscar, including actors like Paul Giamatti, Jeffrey Wright, and Bradley Cooper.
This was Murphy’s first time being nominated for an Oscar, but he was the favorite to win after scooping up several other awards for his role in “Oppenheimer,” like the BAFTA and the Golden Globe.
Before this, Murphy starred in “The Wind That Shakes the Barley,” a movie directed by Ken Loach, which won a big award at the Cannes Film Festival.
He’s also known for his role in the TV series “Peaky Blinders,” where he won a couple of National Television Awards.
Murphy now joins the ranks of other Irish actors who’ve won the Best Actor Oscar, like Daniel Day-Lewis and Barry Fitzgerald.
In his acceptance speech, he thanked Christopher Nolan, the producer Emma Thomas, his team, and his family. And he proudly declared himself as a “very very proud Irishman.”
In his speech, Murphy also mentioned the significance of the movie’s theme. “Oppenheimer” is about the man who invented the atomic bomb, and Murphy dedicated his award to the peacemakers of the world.
