Dry Ice Mishap at Gurugram Restaurant Raises Safety Concerns

  • Dry ice, mistakenly offered at a restaurant, made diners sick in Gurugram.
  • FSSAI and FDA warn that dry ice can cause serious harm if mishandled.
  • It’s crucial to handle dry ice safely and seek help if accidents occur.

A dangerous mistake happened at a restaurant in Gurugram on March 2, 2024. Some diners were given something called “dry ice” by accident, and it made them really sick.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) all say that dry ice is really dangerous.

It should never be touched or eaten because it can cause serious harm to the skin and insides of the body.

Dry ice is actually frozen carbon dioxide. People use it to keep food cold without needing a fridge.

But if it’s not handled carefully, it can turn into a lot of carbon dioxide gas, which can make it hard to breathe. That’s why it should only be used in places with good airflow.

The FSSAI warns that dry ice should never be kept in a closed space because it can make it hard to breathe.

They say it’s really important to teach everyone who works with food how to use dry ice safely.

The US FDA also says that dry ice can be dangerous. They warn that it can hurt the skin and insides of the body if it’s not handled right.

Even though accidents with dry ice are rare, they can be really serious.

The diners at the Gurugram restaurant got sick right after eating something given to them by a waiter. One person in the group, Ankit Kumar, didn’t eat it and was able to help the others and call for help.

They went to the hospital and found out they had eaten dry ice. The police are investigating what happened, and the people who got sick are getting better in the hospital.

It’s really important to be careful with dry ice. Nobody should touch it with their bare hands, and it should never be eaten.

If anyone works with dry ice, they need to be trained on how to use it safely. And if something goes wrong, like what happened at the restaurant, it’s important to get help right away.
