In a surprising midnight announcement on February 15, Netflix India revealed that Shah Rukh Khan’s latest movie, “Dunki,” directed by Rajkumar Hirani, is now available for streaming on their platform. The Bollywood flick hit theaters on December 21, 2023.
“Dunki” marks the first collaboration between SRK and Hirani. Before this, Shah Rukh had two other big releases in 2023: “Pathaan” and “Jawan,” both of which earned over ₹1,000 crore worldwide. There were high hopes that “Dunki” would follow suit, if not surpass them, but unfortunately, it didn’t quite meet those expectations.
Shah Rukh Khan shared that his motive behind doing three movies in 2023 was to nourish his “Tan Man Dhan” (Body Mind Soul). “Pathaan” required him to focus on his physical fitness, “Jawan” challenged his intellect, and “Dunki” was fulfilling for his soul.
Despite not reaching the same heights as his previous films, “Dunki” did well commercially. It made ₹272 crore in India and an impressive ₹182 crore overseas, totaling ₹454 crore worldwide.
“Dunki” made its mark in the Bollywood top-grossers list for 2023, securing the sixth position. It outperformed movies like OMG 2, Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar, The Kerala Story, Adipurush, and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.
Although it didn’t quite crack the top five, which included blockbusters like “Tiger 3,” “Jawan,” “Pathaan,” “Animal,” and “Gadar 2,” Red Chillies Entertainment claimed that “Dunki” crossed the ₹470 crore mark in earnings.
For young college students interested in movies and entertainment news, “Dunki” presents an intriguing case study of a film that, while not meeting sky-high expectations, still managed to carve out a respectable spot in Bollywood’s box office landscape.
