Former Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Manohar Joshi, passed away on Friday, February 23, at the age of 86. He had been admitted to PD Hinduja Hospital after having a heart attack on February 21 and succumbed to his condition at the hospital, according to family sources. Last year, in May, he was also hospitalized at the same facility due to a brain hemorrhage.
His son, Unmesh, informed Hindustan Times that Joshi had been in the ICU and had been dealing with cardiac issues. The family planned to hold the funeral later in the day at Dadar Shivaji Park Crematorium with full state honors. Before the cremation, his mortal remains would be brought to their house in Matunga.
Joshi’s political career was extensive. He served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 1995 to 1999 and as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 2002 to 2004. He was also a Member of the Rajya Sabha from 2006 to 2012 and held the position of Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises from 1999 to 2002.
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis praised Joshi’s significant contributions to society, politics, and education, highlighting his journey from a corporator and mayor of Mumbai to the chief minister and member of Parliament.
Deputy CM Ajit Pawar lamented the loss of a leader who fought for the rights of Marathi people, expressing his condolences and recognizing Joshi’s impact on Maharashtra’s political, social, and education sectors.
Former Union Minister and NCP founder Sharad Pawar remembered Joshi as a straightforward and hardworking leader who worked tirelessly for the development of Maharashtra. He acknowledged Joshi’s efforts during his tenure as Speaker of the Lok Sabha, particularly in setting up an equestrian statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji in the Parliament premises.
Manohar Joshi’s demise marked the end of an era in Maharashtra’s political landscape, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and service to the people. His contributions will be remembered and cherished by many across the state.
